Taylor's University was pleased to host the听鈥溾�� (YSALI)听at the Lakeside Campus听on Friday, 20th November 2015.听 The event was an informal "Town Hall" forum held by听US President Barrack Obama听during his recent visit to Kuala Lumpur for the 2015 ASEAN and Related Summits. President Barack Obama wanted to share his views and engage with the future leaders of the region and have a more private and intimate discussion with students and pre-selected SE Asian student leaders who are part of the YSALI initiative.听The YSALI Initiative was launched in 2013, and includes participants from all 10 ASEAN countries. The event听was听live-streamed听by the White House, and is now听available on听You Tube.听Professor Perry Hobson, PVC for Global Engagement, commented that听"US Embassy officials initially approached Dr. Andy Nazarechuk, who heads up our ADP program, to host this event during the President's visit to Malaysia. As you might imagine this is not the sort of request that is made lightly and without careful consideration, and we were of course more than happy to oblige in helping the President and US Embassy in KL to host this event". The President has already held a limited number of these "Town Hall' style events with students in the past 鈥� including ones at the University of West Indies听(Jamaica), the听University of Johannesburg听(South Africa)听听and also the听University of Malaya (Malaysia).听

While President Obama was on-campus, he met with Dato Loy Teik Ngan, CEO of the Taylor's Education Group, and the Vice-Chancellor & President of Taylor's University, Emeritus Professor Dato鈥� Dr. Hassan Said. He then entered into a conversation with nearly 600 students in the Town Hall forum, which was made up of a group of Taylor's University students drawn from across the university and also members of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSALI).听 Dr. Andy Nazarechuk, Dean of the SLAS and American Degree Program (ADP) at Taylor's University, commented that听this was "a once in a lifetime opportunity for our Taylor's ADP students to meet and listen to the President of the United States of America".听Taylor's University offers a highly successful American Degree Program (ADP) in its School of Liberal Arts and Sciences (SLAS).
