PENANG Medical College (PMC) has opened a centre in Taman Kelisa Emas, near Seberang Jaya Hospital.
Called 鈥楶MC Clinical Skills & Education Centre鈥�, it offers the students two clinical skills laboratories, seminar rooms, a student area, a multimedia and resource centre as well as accommodation.
PMC students can also experience hands-on patient care while doing their clinical training at Seberang Jaya Hospital.
Upon graduation, students will receive three medical degrees 鈥� Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Obstetrics from the National University of Ireland.
They will also receive the licentiates of the Royal College of Surgeons (RCSI) in Ireland and Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.
The new centre was launched by Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng recently.
鈥淥n behalf of the state government, we congratulate PMC and their joint owners, RCSI and University College Dublin for their remarkable progress over the years.
鈥淭his year, for the first time in history, PMC, RCSI and University College Dublin are offering scholarships amounting to over RM2mil in total for Malaysian students applying to enter PMC in September.
鈥淧MC is the only medical school outside the European Union whose graduates can apply for internships in Ireland,鈥� said Lim, who later signed a plaque.
鈥淪tudents who are interns or do their houseman stint at any one of our government hospitals will also be recognised by the Irish Medical Council,鈥� he added.
In a press conference later, Lim said Penang had achieved the top spot for medical tourism in the country, contributing to 60% of medical visits.
鈥淥ur standard is internationally benchmarked, and while Penang鈥檚 public health services might be short of equipment, the doctors are very good and among the best in the country,鈥� he said.
